1955年にこの作品のセンセーショナルなパフォーマンスを収めたアルバムでデビューを飾ったグレン・グールドは、26年ぶりに斬新で魅惑的なこのデジタルによるステレオ・スタジオ再録音を残し、唐突に世を去りました。まさに鬼才・グールドの墓碑銘といえる永遠の名盤です・・・とのことです。
また興味深い諸井氏の記事によると・・「一見奇異な解釈、異常な選曲も、深くその理由をただせば論理の筋がきちんと通っている。要するにグールドは高度な知性と稀有な感覚を合わせそなえた、極度に感受性の強い、知的な創造的解釈者なのである。今私たちは、現代最高の知性の一人を失ったのだ。（1982.10.12）

This is Glenn Gould's 1981 Recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. This album was made shortly before the pianist's premature death at age 50, so it is significant for being his last recording. While Glenn Gould's 1955 debut recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations has attained legendary status, there are many devoted fans who rank the 1981 recording just as highly, even though it offers a dramatically different interpretation.
Also, according to Mr. Moroi's interesting article ... "The seemingly strange interpretation, the anomalous song selections have logical muscles for deep reasons. In short, Gould has a high degree of intelligence and a rare sense. A very sensitive, intelligent and creative interpreter. Now we have lost one of the greatest intellects of our time.


グールドが映像の中で語っている中で、再録音した理由について「主題と変奏の間を数学的に対応させて、時間的な関係を作り出せると考えた。本来の考え方からすれば、バッハの場合は連続性は旋律にではなく、和声にあるけど、私はリズムとパルスの連続性を試みたい。それなら再録音の意味もある。２０数年ぶりの挑戦はそのためだ。」と語っているが、意味深いですね。
